SP23 Are Doing it Live!

What is the difference between a DJ set and a Live set?

SP23 doin it liveSP23 artist’s, Crystal Distortion, 69DB and Ixindamix have been pioneers of live dance music since the early 1990’s. Each of them with their own unique style, yet they share a belief that live music connects with the dancefloor in a deep and empowering way.

Ixindamix, ‘A large part of a DJ’s skill is the selection, whereas we as live-setters, actually create the music in real time… The beauty of the improvised set is that it allows us to craft a completely individual sound. A big part of my sound being real-time synth automation where new sounds are actually created live – which gives the music an incredibly fresh edge!’

69DB ‘When we go on stage nothing is mixed or arranged. This gives a really flexible way of making music, unique to each situation…’

In this way, SP23 generates a very special synergy between the musicians and the dancers. Because the live performance is created in the moment and is of the moment, the night-long event becomes a whole new shared experience, inwhich everyone is participating. The musicians tune in to the crowd, the crowd tune in to the musicians. It is the language of dance.

When asked why anyone should come and experience SP23’s live performances, Crystal Distortion replied, ‘ Because life will never be the same again!’

After smashing it at Boomtown, playing gigs in Japan, Berlin, Rome and Barcelona – SP23 (with full live and DJ crew, plus special guests) will be doing it live in Bristol!

19 to 24 November 2015, South of France

A four day silent meditation retreat with an evening of techno music.

The Spirit of the Retreat:

During the retreat we shall be immersed totally in silence in order to better enter into contact with ourselves and to awaken our senses. Our days will revolve around silent meditation sessions, sometimes guided, some teachings, group discussions etc. It is very important for the atmosphere of the retreat that everyone participates wholly in the proposed programme, respects the silence and keeps an open mind, full of curiosity and enthusiasm for the exploration.

69DB will be participating fully in this experience with us and it is from this space of silence and inner awareness that he will begin his techno ‘performance’ during the retreat…

You can get an idea of the style of the Dharma nature association and of Denis’ teachings in the video on this page:  http://www.dharmanature.org/eng/

The retreat will happen in a beautiful place in the south of France.

The meals will be vegetarian.

Cost: 200€ plus a donation (dana).

This cost includes food, accommodation and administration costs. At the end of the retreat there will be the opportunity to make a donation to express gratitude to the people whose work enabled this retreat to happen, plus support for the associations Dharma Nature and SP23. This method helps us to avoid having a ‘fixed price’ therefore giving the opportunity for those in financial difficulty to attend, and is thus considered ‘open’ and not as ‘cheap’.

If you are interested in participating please send an email to Debbie at feenix13@me.com

“For the last twelve years I have practised silent meditation. And for the last twenty-five years I have worked as a video artist and designer in the rave scene. It was through going to raves that I first got interested in meditation. Dancing for hours in front of the speaker stacks can stimulate those all important moments of connectedness. While dancing, everything slots into place and one can get glimpses of an underlying truth that normally remains tantalisingly out of reach.

Last summer I met Denis from the association Dharma Nature (www.dharmanature.org). We both share a love of meditation and dance music. We discussed how Techno music, often in combination with chemicals, can open the door to unexplored inner worlds and spirituality. There has been a lot written about the connection between the psychedelic experience and meditation, but much less is known about the connection between pure meditation and pure dance music. We feel that there is some interesting, and as yet unexplored, common ground between the two. The inspiration for Sound, Silence and Dance, came from these discussions.

We want to explore, in a drug-free environment, the different qualities of silence and sound, to develop our sensitivity and quality of listening, and to introduce silent meditation to ravers and non ravers alike. The form would be a four day retreat with guided and silent meditation sessions, and an evening of live Techno music from the renowned 69DB. Are you interested in joining our exploration?”

Max Volume and Charlie Kane join SP23

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Max Volume and Charlie Kane as full blown members of SP23. We are hugely proud to have such unbelievable talents as part of the crew. Here is a little bit about them both and a mix each to check out.

Born in Berlin on the road with Spiral Tribe, Max Volume attended his first rave at 2 weeks old. Immersed within dance music culture from his first breath, he rapidly honed his musical instincts as a teenager and developed a natural flair for performance and production alike.

As his musical identity began to flourish, Max spent 2 years working at Noise Control Audio where he gained an in-depth knowledge of how sound systems work and the physics of sound – concepts which he wove deep into his music.

Playing across Europe with the Audiotrix crew, he swiftly made a name for himself with his energy, technical skill, showmanship and infectious groove, and with a trail of packed dancefloors in his wake, he began to play regularly at SP23 events.

He divides his time equally between playing to packed houses across the continent and submerging himself in his studio working on his forthcoming releases.

Charlie Kane made an instant mark on the musical landscape when in 2011 and at the age of 16, he began unleashing a series of slamming releases that garnered him respect, recognition, and the interest of a wide spectrum of labels. He has released singles on the likes of LOT49, AUX Technology, VIM, Audiotrix, Elektroshok, Diablo Loco, 96kHz, Divergence, Scarcity, Death Proof, Neom and many more.

He was born into the heart of the Spiral Tribe sound system where he developed not only a passion for production, waveforms and frequency, but an intuitive understanding of live performance.

Hugely prolific and consistently switching up styles and vibes, he has become widely known for deeply penetrating tracks in styles as diverse as low slung house and rampaging drum n bass. Carving an especially incisive niche within the breaks scene, he swiftly became a regular in the Beatport charts.

He is currently working on his first full length album and is scheduled to play such events as the iconic Transmusicales in Rennes as well as at selected SP23 events.
